Abstract

We survey the progress in interplanetary telecommunications technology made possible by Shannon's genius from 1963 (when the speaker joined Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory) to the present, and speculate a bit about the future.

This is a repeat of the Shannon Lecture the speaker delivered at the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, Chicago, Illinois, June 28, 2004. The famed lecture was attended by more than 800 symposium participants.

The Speaker

Professor McEliece is an internationally recognized contributor to Information Theory, Coding, and Communications. He received his Ph.D. from Caltech, and did research at JPL, before becoming a professor at the University of Illinois. Later on, he returned to Caltech as a professor, and has been there for more than 20 years. Professor McEliece is the recipient of the Shannon Award, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
