ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bob Werner

Bob Werner received a B.A. (1972) in Mathematics from the University of Iowa and M.S.E. (1990) and Ph.D. (1996) degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Asteroid 3891 Werner is named in his honor. Before the graduate degrees, he was a systems programmer and research and development project leader at the University of Iowa's Weeg Computing Center. Since joining JPL's Navigation and Mission Design Section in 1996, he has worked on Deep Space 1's autonomous optical navigation flight software and a derivative of that software for Deep Impact. He also helps design the Dawn mission.
