ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Richard Kornfeld

Richard Kornfeld received an M.Sc. in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, and a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. His doctoral research focus was on GPS-based guidance, navigation, and control for aircraft. He has been with the NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory since 1999. At JPL, Dr. Kornfeld contributed to the highly successful Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission as part of the operations team. More recently, he was the entry, descent, and landing communications lead systems engineer for the Phoenix Mars Lander and was one of the mission managers for the Phoenix surface mission. He is currently the supervisor of the Surface Systems System Engineering Group in JPL's Systems Engineering Section. In this capacity, he is dedicating most of his time in support of the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission scheduled to launch in 2011. Dr. Kornfeld is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
